Filmed in ETSAM, Madrid
April 27, 2012

Performance shot in the ETSAM architecture school in Madrid with the first year students class of DAI  2 (Drawing Analyzing and Ideation 2) with professor Atxu Amann, submitted to the contest 'Video Talentos' organized by Fundacion Banco Santander and OpenBank.
That was my second semester as teacher assistant with professor Atxu Amann and among the multiple things we did during that semester, one of the coolest was this contest entry developed by the whole class based upon an idea by Inés Sell that was previously selected by popular vote. I don't really know how close the final video is to what she had in mind. Even we had 5 or 6 cameras recording the performance the final footage was terrible, but somehow we manage to make a video out of it.

●WEB DESIGN● AA&NN chronoBLOG

ChronoBLOG design and content creation. Html and CSS tinkering by Aaron Busca.
This blog is basically an on-line manifestation of the way I have been organizing my works and references for a long time in my analog and digital life. I started to visualize this project in a more clear way after the end of year 2007 when I founded AA&NN with my brother during the WEST OF THE MOON / EAST OF THE SUN project in Madrid Architecture School.

OPENING DAY POST

We are a little bit obsessed with having all kind of media organized and classified in AA&NN. The videos, books and the articles we consume everyday are a great source for inspiration and motivation in our projects, and for a long time we have been building a personal archive of everything we find interesting, in our personal hard drives.

Today we have decided to start blogging this kind of stuff instead of keeping it just for ourselves. At the same time, we thought it would be great to start building in parallel, a chronology of events that took place in our lives as well as projects we are working on. This way we would have a a broader view of where we come from and where we are going. In short; we will be blogging both, current and past date events and new and old projects and events.

We want this ChronoBLOG to be our ultimate archive where we would like to have everything we like in the Internet, accessible from anywhere, in an easy and a convenient way and shared it with everyone. Our hope is that many people can find inspiration with the stuff collected in here.

After six months outside the architecture school, I came back for the first days of classes of the second semester and my friends and professors Atxu Amann and Marta Maiz were there organizing a crazier than ever commencement class for DAI2. I was luckily there to shoot it and I end up editing this video featuring the awesome music composed composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for David Fincher's latest movie: The Social Network.

Featuring Atxu Amann and the ETSAM DAI 1 students
Photographed and edited by Ioannes Busca
shot with Sony  Hi8 Handycam in ETSAM, Madrid
October 28, 2008

Video recorded for the DAI 1 (Drawing, Analysing and Ideation 1) class with professor Atxu Amann in the Madrid Architecture School, ETSAM.
Atxu Amann asked me to record this action that the first year architecture students in DAI 1 class have been preparing for many weeks as a tribute to Javier Seguí, professor in the Ideation Department that is retiring soon. The performance consisted in picking one of the many small drawings Javier usually draws in his notebooks and translate it in to a huge matrix of 8 by 8 DIN-A0 size boards and dance with them.

●CONCEPT DESIGN● DUSTLIC (Japanese campaign)

297×420mm
Digital Image
Ink jet printed in paper

Product and ad design for ETSAM Architecture School class.
After making the home commercial campaign of DUSTLIC, I decided it would be fun to try to do some international variations of the printed commercial. I did this Japanese one with the help of google translator, my apologies for the Japanese readers, I will try harder next time.

●CONCEPT DESIGN● DUSTLIC

297×420mm
Digital Image
Ink jet printed in paper

Product and ad design for  ETSAM Architecture School class.
We had to take something in this years design class and improve it, so I decided to take my new Ikea Lersta lamp  and design a plastic cover for it  to prevent dust from getting in when I put it looking upwards so that the light is not direct when I am reading. I name it DUSTLIC because is a piece of plastic that avoids dust.  The project was explained with this printed ad campaign that would communicate the idea to potential consumers, because after all, what is the point of solving a problem just for yourself?  If this problem affects to millions of owners of this lamp what better than make people know that this problem  can be solved right now with DUSTLIC. I belive that the only way of reaching the attention of consumers is by commercial campaigns that explain the product in an easy way so that everyone can understand them.

●LOGO DESIGN● ETSAM LIBRARY

Logo submitted to the ETSAM library logo competition. This design was awarded with the second price and therefore it was never used.
The idea behind this logo is to make a simple yet a not common representation of a book as we kwon today, constructed with sheets of paper bound together. If the future of the book is hard to define, it's even harder to define what kind of documents or services will provide a library in the upcoming years so even the book is the main reason of being of the libraries, I decided to represent the book in a rather abstract way.

●CONCEPT DESIGN● MOR GAN I & II prototypes

MOR GAN I
Opened: 60×60×60 cm | Folded: 30×40×15 cm
Working Prototype
PVC and staples

MOR GAN II
Opened: 90×90×90 cm | Folded: 45×45×25 cm
Working Prototype
PVC, staples and fiberglass rods

Product design for Madrid Architecture School class.
I designed these prototypes in a design class with professors Aranguren + Gallegos. That semester they entrusted us with the work to get a material and give it a new use. The main idea was to create a membrane that would cover the user, that was foldable and transportable and that could be built using simple materials and folding operations.

●LOGO DESIGN● AAGRAFA

Logo  created for AAGRAFA the Audiovisual department of the Madrid Architecture School Library founded by Juan Antonio González Cárceles. AAGRAFA stands for 'Adquisición y Almacenamiento de Material Gráfico Arquitectónico'. This logo was used in the many DVD covers that were produced from September 2005 until the year 2011 when the department was divided from the library and became part of the school itself receiving  a different name and therefore leaving the logo useless.
The two 'A's merged together represent the well known fast forward logo of the video players. Those days were still half analog half digital days so a lot of fast forwarding and rewinding was needed to finish the tasks.

●ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN● INTERVENTION IN UPPER LAWN PAVILION

Four boards
297×420 mm each
Digital and traditional techniques
Ink jet printed on paper

Proposal for an intervention in the Alison & Peter Smithson's Upper Lawn Pavilion developed for architecture design class in Madrid Architecture School.
I discovered Alison and Peter Smithson's work in a school trip we did last year to UK, where we visited many of their buildings. This year we had to choose an existing house from a list, draw it and analyze it first, and then make a proposal for an expansion. I chose these architect's Upper Lawn Pavilion. While researching to find information to draw the house properly, I found their books and texts and is then when I really started to understand their approach to architecture. Magnificent, clear minded, honest, human scale architecture. Nothing to do with what we are used to see now a days in magazines.

●DVD DESIGN● DAI 1 2003 OBSESIÓN: LUZ

DVD authoring that collects moments from Atxu Amann's DAI 1 class in Architecture School of Madrid (ETSAM).
This was the first DVD I have ever designed and authored and I remember it was a big pain to discover how all this new stuff worked. Looking back at it I fell embarrassed by the design of the menus, they are ridiculously ugly.

●ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN● MOLLER HOUSE EXTENSION

594×420mm
Traditional and digital techniques
Ink jet printed on paper

Architectural proposal for a pavillion in Adolf Loos Moller house's backyard developed for architecture design class in Madrid Architecture School.
Memory
From the start the project is thought not only as a pavilion for people who visit the house but a meeting point where anyone can go, stay and talk with other people. The backyard of the house is a nice space for that.
The proposed building is basically a prefabricated metallic arch that is seven meters high in its upper part and crosses the garden from one side to the other, covering the 98 square meters of it and transforming it in a polyvalent space. The textile roof that covers the structure can be folded, opening the space to the rest of the garden. These textile walls are also used as projection screens.
All the furniture and systems needed are provided inside four modular blocks that keep everything hidden while not in use. All these content  grows through the pavilion and is moved by the visitors themselves, who for example can take a chair, use it and return it to the block when they don't need it anymore.

●ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN● ARANA HOUSE EXPANSION

3 boards
594×420 mm each
Traditional and digital techniques
Ink jet printed on paper

House extension proposal for Arana House in Ribera del Manzanares, Madrid. Developed in the second year architecture design class in Madrid Architecture School.

Memory:
The expansion of Arana house in the Ribera de Manzanares is a complex project due to a law of conservation of buildings with a certain typology established years after the making of the house. That means that any alteration in the House has to be done now with the actual normative and basically the full house would have to be be modified in the case of intervene on it. That is the reason why the house has not suffered any renewal work from the outside for a long time.
However, the needs of the inhabitants in the house have change through the years, what makes an expansion inevitable. One of the sons, who is a Star Wars figures and models passionate is looking for a bigger room to keep on collecting stuff. From the start, the decision of putting a container in the flat roof of the house was an idea that seemed to work. This kind of industrial element doesn't try to mimic with the house but with the cinematic imaginary that filmmaker George Lucas created decades ago. The contrast with the house helped to emphasize the idea of an alien ship that rest in the roof.
As the extension is just a prefabricated element that is put on the roof without the need of mayor work, the problem of having a license to build is avoided. The façade of the house itself is not modified and in the worst case scenario, if the element has to be removed, this is a task that can be done easily.
The user can access to this  container elevated in narrow columns from the terrace and from his old room through a spiral stairs that connect both spaces. The interior is completely diaphanous so the user can organize the inside of the room depending on his needs thanks to articulated screens. The floor works also as a container so that there is no need of extra furniture to keep things and space is liberated for other purposes. The fact that the container is elevated makes it possible to use the space bellow during all year long, keeping the user away of rain and sun and making a perfect spot to rest while looking at the river from the top of the house.

●ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN● UNDERGROUND MODULES

594× 420mm
Traditional and digital techniques.
Ink jet printed on paper

Architectural proposal for a first year course in Madrid Architecture School.
Intervention in Preciados street in the center of Madrid. The idea is to make personal capsules that came out from ground so that peasants could hide, rest, read, sleep or whatever they feel like doing in that moment. A moment of  solitude in the middle of the crowded city.

2003 | Color | Digital Video | 16:9 | Stereo | 6min 22s
A Project by Cristian Alvarez, Elena Calvo, Alba Rodriguez & Ioannes Busca
Shot on miniDV in ETSAM, Madrid in April 2003

Short film created for the first year DAI 2 class (Drawing Analyzing and Ideation 2) with professors Atxu Amann, Marta Maiz and Ricardo Santonja in the Architecture School of Madrid.
It was our first year in Madrid ArchitectureSchool and Elena, Cristian, Alba and me end up teamed up to make a short film for DAI class. I believe this this is the first time any of us worked making a video.  We managed to borrow a JVC miniDV camcorder, but end up editing on VHS... then we played the VHS tape back on a TV  and re-record it again on miniDV, to finally import this footage to Adobe Premiere and add the music. We had a great time.
